Rustic Burned Boxes

For the past month or so I’ve been tinkering with the idea for rustic wooden boxes decorated with my custom wood burnings.  The variations and character of the reclaimed wood gives them a very nice old-timey feel.  They also allow me put to great new use something that would otherwise be thrown away (a minor obsession of mine).

I have a couple different sizes going, but I really like this new, two-compartment design.  It’s 5″ x 8″ and stands a bit over 2.5″ tall.  At this size, the cover is large enough to get a really nice feel for the burning on top and with two compartments I think it’s both functional and slightly mysterious.

The other advancement with these are using flames to singe the grain for added drama and hand burnishing them for a wonderfully soft feel.  These will eventually be sealed with a light coat of polyurethane for a durable, no maintenance finish.

These boxes will be part a new side-line series of work that I’ll formally introduce later.  But for now, I’ll post some here, on my facebook page, and they’ll be at the Open Studio locally on December 5-7 (details on that later).

If you can’t make it to the Open Studio and need a unique, affordable Christmas present (hint, hint) just let me know and I’ll hook you up…
