I have always created sketches as a way to work out form and record ideas for new sculptures, but they have always been a means to an end. Lately though, I found myself making them for their own graphical beauty. But I’m a sculptor. I make physical objects. How am I supposed to make sculpture as a physical drawing?
Thus began my Shadow Series. They are fabricated Cor-ten steel forms displaying the simple, elegant lines of these new drawings. Some of them also reflect my new experiments with color. Painted and hand distressed, they are meant to capture the character and whimsy of long-weathered industrial forms. Because the process of making these, in a weird way, resembles that of print-making, I am approaching them as open editions. Each one is uniquely hand-made completely by myself, as always.
